Farming is still stuck with a straw-chewing yokel image, according to BBC TV’s Countryfile, which recently ran an item on recruitment in agriculture to coincide with the findings of a recent report from the Royal Agricultural Society of England, showing that the agricultural sector is likely to need up to 60,000 new recruits to the industry over the next ten years, and is having difficulty attracting the right applicants. That might be encouraging for those attending agricultural college this year – or for those contemplating a future in the industry.
Lantra, the Sector Skills Council for environmental and land-based industries, provides information on recruitment and training in the sector, and its website has a good section on careers, opportunities and training courses.
Intute Agriculture supports students and teachers studying agriculture and related subjects at universities and agricultural colleges by providing online information on evaluated resources suitable for study and teaching. .. And a new edition of its internet tutorial has just been added to the Intute Virtual Training Suite at http://www.vts.intute.ac.uk/tutorial/agriculture/
One wonders what Walter Gabriel would have made of all this.
