What is pathology?

Posted October 16th, 2009 by Laurian Williamson

National Pathology Week  (NPW) will hopefully answer this question and debunk many pathology myths during this week long event, which will be held from 02 November through 08th November.

Events will be held across the country and the website provides some really interesting resources for students and a comprehensive listing of NPW events (can even be sorted by geographical location).

Career information for secondary school students and medical students is provided. Some interesting facts (sourced from the NPW website)

  1. Pathology is involved in 70% of all diagnoses made in the NHS
  2. Millions of pathology tests are carried out every year – over 14 tests for every man, woman and child in the country
  3. Forensic pathologists make up less than 1% of pathologists
  4. There are nearly 20,000 scientists working in pathology

For a definition of pathology – have a look here. Intute Medicine has more than 200 evaluated educational Web resources on pathology in its collection, they can be viewed here.
