Volcano set to erupt?

Posted November 3rd, 2009 by Paul Meehan

Colombia’s Galeras volcano, one of the world’s most active with 5 eruptions in 2 years, may be poised for another in a matter of days. The Geological and Mining Institute are monitoring the situation, anxious to avoid a repeat of the 1993 tragedy in which scientists inside the crater were killed in a major eruption. Almost 7,000 people live in close proximity to the crater.

The Huila volcano, also located in Southern Colombia, remains on alert status.

A great deal of information about volcanoes, including Galeras, is available from the Intute World Guide: Natural Hazards -Volcanoes pages.
