The British Pathe website claims to be the world's first digital news archive. It provides free access to preview copies of digital news films from the late 19th and 20th centuries. The collection covers all aspects of social history including sport and entertainment as well as health-related items (the opening of hospitals, royal illnesses, films on vaccination and the National Health Service). Using a powerful search tool it is possible to search for digitised news reels and download them. It is also possible to purchase higher quality copies of the films. The files are available as Windows Media 8 files and the website provides details of where suitable media players may be downloaded from. Users must register to download files and use a shopping basket into which files are placed. These processes can be slightly confusing at times, and are slightly long-winded. The site does however provide general help information and a list of frequently asked questions. The 'beginners guide' in the help section is particularly useful, and includes illustrative screen shots (this is provided in PDF format for which the Adobe Acrobat Reader is needed).

The announcements section provides news relating to scholarships and research in ancient medical history. The site also provides information about how to join the MEDANT-L email discussion list. A new (July 2009) free tutorial, 'Internet for Midwifery' is one of the Intute Virtual Training Suite tutorials which aim to help university students develop Internet research skills to assist with their university coursework and assignments. This tutorial is divided into four main sections: Tour; Discover; Judge; and Success, with interactive features including quizzes, practical exercises, and a 'links basket' which allows the user to keep a record of all website URLs mentioned in the tutorial. The tutorial takes around one hour to complete, allowing the user to work through the material in their own time and at their own pace.
