This reports the findings of a systematic review of the clinical effectiveness of patient education models for adults with Type 2 diabetes. The aim of structured education is to support effective self-management in diabetes. The review was commissioned by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to inform the update of their guidance on Type 2 diabetes and updates an earlier review published in 2003. Studies from the previous systematic review were included. The findings of the update around the impact of structured education and its implications for service provision are substantially in line with the earlier review. Recommendations are made for further research. The report was published in April 2008 as part of the Health Technology Assessment Programme which is managed by the National Co-ordinating Centre for Health Technology Assessment (NCCHTA) at the University of Southampton's Wessex Institute for Health Research and Development.
