Defining public interest anthropology, by Peggy Reeves Sanday
http://www.sas.upenn.edu/~psanday/pia.99.html
This is the opening statement presented at the American Anthropological Association's Symposium, Defining a Public Interest Anthropology. The author argues that anthropologists across the sub-disciplines are increasingly turning to the challenges posed by local, national, and global social problems and that it is time to distill and synthesize some widely shared principles of practice which can reinvigorate if not reinvent anthropology. She focuses in particular on two trends: 1) Merging problem solving with theory and analysis in the interest of change motivated by a commitment to social justice, racial harmony, equality, and human rights; and 2) engaging in public debate on human issues to make the results of anthropological analysis accessible to a broad audience. This address is reproduced on the author's home page.

Leprosy is a Development Issue: Anthropological Methods and Planned Change, by Margot Wilson-Moore
http://www.brocku.ca/epi/casid/wilson.htm
Based on three years of collaborative research between the Danish-Bangladesh Leprosy Mission (DBLM) this paper discusses ways in which anthropological methods can provide novel and often useful insights into the impact of cultural constructions on apparently straightforward development challenges. Leprosy would seem on the surface to be a relatively simple problem requiring a relatively simple biomedical cure. Nevertheless, the ways in which leprosy is culturally defined reach far beyond the physical parameters of the disease to confound effective eradication. By insisting that physical phenomena be contextualized in the cultural processes in which they occur, the anthropologist contributes important information for innovative and appropriate development planning. The author is in the Department of Anthropology, University of Victoria and the paper appears on the Web as part of the site of the Canadian Association for the Study of International Development.
