Africa divination, Mambila and others : anthropological studies of divination

http://www.era.anthropology.ac.uk/Era_Resources/Era/Divination/index.html

This site has been prepared by David Zeitlyn and Michael Fischer for the ERA (Experience Rich Anthropology) project funded by HEFCE. ERA aims to provide teaching materials that emphasise the use of field data and analysis. This site contains online simulations of Venda divining dice, and Mambila spider divination. It is hoped that direct experience of the processes involved in such divination will facilitate the comprehension of divination as described in the anthropological literature. The site also contains a number of links to online papers concerning divination.

Ancestors in Africa : selected readings and Mambila case material

http://www.era.anthropology.ac.uk/Era_Resources/Era/Ancestors/intro.html

This site is the product of an ERA (Experience Rich Anthropology) project, funded by HEFCE. ERA aims to enhance the teaching and learning of anthropology through providing resources for use in teaching with an increased emphasis on field data and analysis. This site contains links to selected readings and correspondence from journals concerning the discussion of ancestors in African anthropology. It is hoped that this will provide an analytical framework with which to approach the Mambila case study that is also presented. This is an interesting example as it is unclear as to whether or not the Mambila can meaningfully be said to have ancestors.

Ethnographic database project

http://www.ucl.ac.uk/~ucsalfo/EDP/

The Ethnographic Database Project (EDP) is a web-based interface for the collection of comparative ethnographic data which can be used in cross-cultural analyses of human culture and behaviour. The EDP allows anthropologists to enter data from their field research in a standardised format. The project is in its early stages and is, at present, limited to data on a society's organisation, kinship and marriage practices, subsistence economy and pattern of sexual division of labour. There is also a focus on societies speaking Indo-European languages as these are felt to be underrepresented in existing ethnographic datasets.
