Bakhtin Centre (The)

The Bakhtin Centre was founded in October 1994 and is based at the University of Sheffield. The aim of the Centre "is to promote multi- and inter-disciplinary research on the work of the Russian philosopher and theorist Mikhail Bakhtin and the Bakhtin Circle, and on related areas of cultural, critical, linguistic and literary theory." The centre runs e-mail news and discussion lists and houses extensive printed resources relating to the Bakhtin Circle and to critical and cultural theory. There is news and event information.

The Centre for Theoretical Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences was established in 1990. It is an interdisciplinary centre which draws its staff from the majority of social science disciplines at the University of Essex where it is located. The centre aims "to stimulate contact and exchanges between different theoretical approaches and disciplines". To facilitate this it organizes mini-courses and seminars; a distinguished annual lecture; and thematic development seminars. This website provides a large number of full-text sociology, anthropology and social theory books free of charge. The works are only available in French. The website was started and is maintained by Jean-Marie Tremblay of the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi. The list of works available includes social theorists from the 18th to the 20th century (for example: Comte, Descartes, Hobbes, Spencer, Engels, Marx, Freud, Lukacs), and prominent sociologists and anthropologists (for example: Durkheim, Malinowski, Evans-Pritchard, Mead, Mauss). Many of the books are available for downloading over the Internet. Some, however, some will not be available until copyright in them expires. Tremblay has ongoing plans to increase the number of works and authors available. Books may be downloaded in either Word 2001 or PDF format. Tables of contents may be viewed for all books in HTML format. The website is developed in collaboration with the Paul-Émile-Boulet library of the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi.

This is a critical theory resource provided by the publisher Bedford St. Martin's. The site lists important culture theorists and provides short biographies and links to useful websites. These writers and philosophers include Hegel, Heidegger, Simone be Beauvoir, Edward Said, Jean-Paul Sartre and Susan Sontag, as well as Walter Benjamin, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Jacques Lacan and Judith Butler. The links are not well maintained, however the site does provide some useful references. It is not a publishers list though there is a general link to related texts.

Despite the opacity of its mission statement Humanitas is an "interdisciplinary journal dedicated to the invigoration of the humanities, including the social sciences properly understood". Humanitas offers a number of interesting articles and reviews for those interested in philosophical and theoretical aspects of sociology and other social sciences. The journal is a print-based publication, but there is a selection of full-text articles and reviews online. The current issue can be accessed and issues before 2003 are free to download.

This site contains a comprehensive listing of the works of Norbert Elias, a German sociologist and refugee from Nazi Germany who lived and worked in England, receiving recognition for his work only towards the end of his life. The site lists not only published books and articles but also manuscripts and oral communications, in a variety of media and including reprints and translations. The material has been catalogued, cross-referenced and organised by date. There is, however, no search facility. Also on this site is a bibliography of secondary literature on Elias, in alphabetical order. The site has been produced by Ingo Mörth, Gerhard Fröhlich and Werner Höbart of the Universität Linz, Austria. The catalogue is in German and there are intorductions in English, French, Spanish Dutch and Italian.
