Cuban rafter phenomenon

This site explores the Cuban rafter phenomenon, the migration of Cubans, balseros, to the United States from 1994. The site gives details of the balseros, their journeys, and looks at some of the wider issues behind the Cuban migrations. An extensive bibliography is included. The Cuban Rafter Project was organized by the University of Miami (UM), Florida International University (FIU) and St. Thomas University (STU). Flash MX Player, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Real Player installed as browser plug-ins on your computer are required to take advantage of some of the information collected on the site. There is a background sound of waves which can be switched off if required. Much of the site is also available in Spanish.

Although designed primarily for asylum purposes, the site is of more general interest for demography and country information. A newletter is available free online on registration. These selected papers from an UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) Expert Group Meeting were published in 2005. International migration is seen as both a facilitating and constraining factor in the achievement of MDGs (Millenium Development Goals). The meeting provided information for policy makers in planning and policy development on best practices in this complex area. Invited experts were requested to speak on a number of topics relating to migration and development, including poverty reduction, health, gender, environment and global partnerships for development.

Irish Geography is the journal of the Geographical Society of Ireland, and is the premier peer-reviewed journal devoted to the geography of Ireland. It is published twice a year, and articles cover a range of issues including historical geography, geomorphology, modern human geography, and environmental issues. The Poverty Action Lab was founded in the Economics Department of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2003. "The mission of the lab is to translate research into action that helps the lives of the poor in their communities. It is the only research center in the world devoted to combating global poverty by rigorously testing the effectiveness of poverty programs through the use of randomized evaluations. The lab applies the same level of rigor to the measurement of poverty alleviation programs as is routinely used to test the effectiveness of medications." The Center is based within the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) at Columbia University. The aim of the the WDC for Human Interactions in the Environment is to further the understanding of the impact of human activity on the environment by facilitating through its website access to a range of integrated socioeconomic, geophysical and ecological databases. It provides access to "a wide range of global data, associated documentation, and visualization and analysis tools, and to the community of experts on global data." Users may search individual databases or across a range specific to their area of interest.
