A basic guide to international environmental legal research

Online guide to international environmental legal research written by Heidi Frostestad Kuehl who is Research and Instructional Services Librarian at Pritzker Legal Research Center, Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago. The guide was published in 2006 ( and updated in 2008) on the Globalex website and made freely available by the Hauser Global Law School Program at the New York University School of Law. The author gives an introduction to the topic with a key to commonly used abbreviations. There is a section on treaty research providing a table of agreements and links to websites dealing with the following topics: hazardous waste; nuclear waste; ocean and marine sources; ozone and protection of the atmosphere; pollution; protection of species and wildlife; sustainable development and trade and the environment. The site also includes links to online collections of treaties and finding tools for national environmental laws. There is a list of printed materials and suggested Library of Congress search terms for searching library catalogues. Links are also given to environmental law journals, web portals, environmental organizations, legal blogs and current awareness tools.

It provides an introduction to the subject and to sources of information about harmonized commercial laws. The emphasis is on free internet resources. The guide outlines the role of various intergovernmental organisations, such as the European Union, the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) and the Organization of American States (OAS). The primary treaties governing various aspects of commercial law are covered in the guide and links are provided to treaty research in general. There is also a section on organisations that have issued principles and standards relating to commercial law. Links are given to related research institutes, think tanks, teaching materials and other research guides.

This document is part of the transcription of significant documents in American history by the Avalon Project of the Yale Law School. This is the full text of a lease agreement between the governments of the United States of America and the Republic of Cuba, subject to terms to be agreed at a later date. "For the time required" Cuba agrees to lease land for coaling and naval stations to the USA within specified areas: Guantanamo, Bahia Honda, and the peninsula of Cerro del Morillo and Punta del Carenero. The US also has rights to use and occupy the adjacent waters, maintaining free passage for Cuban vessels, and including the rights to improve access. Cuban sovereignty is to be retained, but the United States has jurisdiction over these areas, and has the right to acquire land and property within these areas. The document was signed by President T Estrada Palma of Cuba and President Theodore Roosevelt of the United States in Habana on 16th February 1903.

The Al-Muqtafi database is produced by the Institute of Law at Birzeit University in Palestine. The database contains references to all legislation enacted in Palestine since the middle of the nineteenth century and can be searched by subject, historical period, date, keyword or type. Records include the title, date, topic, bibliographic details and links to any amendments. A selection of documents are provided in full-text mostly in Arabic. Al-Muqtafi also provides court judgements which can be searched by case type, historical period, case number, date or keyword. Some full-text judgements are available in Arabic. International documents dealing with Palestine include accords, agreements, decisions of the Arab League, proclamations and resolutions. Documents made available in full-text are mostly in Arabic with a few in English or Hebrew. Other materials provided on the site include a legal thesaurus, full text issues of the Palestinian Official Gazette back to 1994 (in Arabic) and a page of related web links.
