This section of the British Antarctic Survey website provides background information and full-text copies of the Antarctic Treaty 1959 and related agreements including the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Seals (1972), Agreed Measures for the Conservation of Antarctic Fauna and Flora (1964), the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (1980) and the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty (1991). This collection of international agreements is known as the Antarctic Treaty System. The site gives a list of signatories to the treaty and information about the specialised bodies who contribute to the work of the Antarctic Treaty System.

This searchable database provides access to the text of measures adopted by the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM) including all recommendations, measures, decisions and resolutions from 1961 onwards. Users can search or browse documents by meeting, category and topic. Categories include environmental protection, marine pollution, monuments, scientific cooperation and tourism. These categories can be broken down into more detailed topic headings. There is also a keyword search option. Records include related attachments and information on the legal status of the measure.

The Antarctic Treaty Secretariat is based in Buenos Aires and is responsible for providing information about the Antarctic Treaty system and support for the annual Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM). The site has documents, related agreements and information relevant to the Antarctic Treaty including the text of the original Treaty, the Environment Protocol and details of Parties to the Treaty. There is also information and documentation relating to the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP) and to ATCM meetings. The Environmental Protection section of the site looks at measures taken to protect the Antarctic environment including flora and fauna, waste management, marine pollution, protected areas and liability arising from environmental emergencies. There is also information on the International Polar Year. The Antarctic Treaty database contains measures adopted by the ATCM and there is access to an online catalogue of publications in the Secretariats library. The site can be viewed in English, French, Spanish and Russian internfaces.

The Arctic Council was established by the Ottawa Declaration of 1996 as a high level intergovernmental forum to provide a means for promoting cooperation, coordination and interaction among the Arctic States, with the involvement of the Arctic Indigenous communities and other Arctic inhabitants on common Arctic issues. The member states of the Arctic Council are Canada, Denmark (including Greenland and the Faroe Islands), Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russian Federation, Sweden and the United States. The website provides access to news items and information on events and meetings taking place at the Arctic Council. Declarations and founding documents of the Arctic Council are made freely available to download from the site. There is also information on the scientific work of the Arctic Council which is carried out by six expert working groups focusing on such issues as climate change, biodiversity conservation and pollution prevention. A page of related web links is also given.

Full text online version of the 9th (2002) edition of the Handbook of the Antarctic Treaty System made freely available on the US Department of State website. The Handbook can be viewed in PDF and contains all the relevant agreements which make up the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS) including the Antarctic Treaty, the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty, the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Seals and the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources. Also included are guidance and details of recommendations, measures, decisions and resolutions adopted by the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM). The Handbook has chapters dealing with the operation of the ATS, inspections carried out under the Treaty, scientific cooperation, tourism and protection of the Antarctic environment.

The guide has been written by Ruth Bird who is Bodleian Law Librarian at the University of Oxford, Dianne Thompson who is a Librarian at the Legal Services Commission of South Australia and Anna Matich of the ASIC in Brisbane. The guide was published in the features section of LLRX.com in July 2008 and updates previous versions published in October 2000, April 2002 and December 2005. The authors offer guidance on researching law for the region, explaining matters of terminology when using the internet to locate Pacific law sites. A tabulated alphabetical list of countries and sites provides links to primary sources with notes on the political status of the country and any politically associated country. Other sections of the guide look at selected journals, treaties and specialised legislation, academic sites and research centres and related non-law sites.
