This site provides access to the full-text of a conference paper by Igor Cusack which was delivered at the UK Political Studies Association annual conference, University of Leicester 15-17 April 2003. It examines the way in which images on postal stamps issued by Portugal and colonies of the Portuguese empire were used to define and transmit the dominant ideology of imperialism, colonialism and nationalism. Reference is also made to the ways in which images of women on stamps reinforce the patriarchy.
