Aviation : the Social, Economic and Environmental Impact of Flying

This report sets out to examine the growth of aviation in the United Kingdom and its environmental consequences. The report was written by Professor John Whitelegg, Stockholm Environment Institute, University of York and published by the Ashden Trust, 2000. In the report Professor Whitelegg seeks to provide evidence for a public debate on the issues by predicting future levels of demand for aviation, and examining the impact of aviation on noise and ground level emissions and the links between these environmental problems and human health. It also describes the impact of aviation on climate change, and the economic impacts of aviation including airport development. The report concludes with a number of policy recommendations for government and local authorities. It is presented in the PDF file format, users will require Adobe Acrobat Reader software to view it.

The UK Government Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has released a set of noise maps for England. These are available on the website in order to provide information and data on the "ambient noise climate in cities and major transportation sources in England". Interactive noise maps for cities and large urban areas are displayed when the user searches by type of noise source or postcode. The sources of noise include major road systems, airports, rail systems and industrial zones. A limited number of English urban areas is covered, but some of the transport systems in rural areas are included. There are also maps which can be downloaded as PDF files which are not yet available interactively.

The charity Environmental Protection UK makes this booklet available on their website as an introduction to the various aspects of noise pollution. The subject is presented comprehensively beginning with the legal definition of “noise nuisance” and its different types. Following the legal introduction are tips on dealing with noise nuisance from directly approaching the source of noise to the last resort of civil or legal action. There is also a section on measures taken by councils to reduce noise through “Noise Abatement Zones”. Finally, non-domestic sources of noise, such as construction sites, workplaces and transport are discussed. Transport noise is a particularly problematic subject on an environmental level with regard to the expansion of airports around the UK. The booklet can be downloaded as a PDF file.

There is a noise forum containing essays from citizens and noise activists around the world. Noise News features summaries of noise related articles appearing in major newspapers, it can be searched or browsed. There is also a NPC Law Library, an events diary, success stories, guidelines and other resources. Links to related sites are provided.
