Other information In its 2007 communication “A Single Market for 21st Century Europe”, the Commission stated its belief not only that the single market still has untapped potential but also that it needs to adapt to new realities: for example, by delivering more for citizens and consumers; taking better advantage of globalisation; opening new frontiers of knowledge and innovation; and integrating a strong social and environmental dimension into the single market project. The object of this conference is to deliberate critically upon some of the major issues identified in the 2007 Review: for example, how cross border trade can be reconciled with environmental concerns about issues such as “food miles”; how the role of collective labour organisations can be adapted to the demands of the Single Market; how to secure more effective protection for consumers faced with the growing complexity of international trading relationships; the need for reform of banking regulation in the light of the current credit crisis and global economic downturn; tensions and opportunities in the transatlantic trade relationship; and how to promote the European version of market integration as a “global brand”.
