Old China hands archive
Description: The Old China Hands Archive is a project hosted by the Oviatt Library Digital Collections, based at California State University, Northridge. The resource primarily consists of a textual introductory page, and digitised images of Tientsin (modern day Tianjin) in the late 1940s. Old China Hands is a term referring to westerners with an experiential knowledge of China, usually through long-term residence or service. Although users will not find a huge collection of photographs, those included here reveal a great deal about life in China during the turbulent Civil War years. Images cover: children; evacuation; the foreign presence in China; the elderly; and street life in Tientsin.

Users can browse the images, or search through keywords. Images are displayed in full size and thumbnail versions, along with associated keywords, which can be selected to reveal further images. However, the resource as a whole would benefit from further contextualisation of its images, or a further section on the historical background to the collection. It would be of interest to any historian of urban, Civil War China, and to those seeking images of foreign military presence in China.
