| Title: | Retracing Ireland's lost archaeology |
|---|---|
| Description: | This website presents a University College Cork (UCC) research project aiming to publish the watercolours commissioned from James Plunket in the mid nineteenth century by the Danish archaeologist Jens J. A. Worsaae (1821-85). The Plunket watercolours beautifully reproduce some of the artefacts then held by the Royal Irish Academy (RIA). The UCC research project aims to identify as many as possible of these items, since no other record of the RIA's holdings at that time survive. All twelve drawings may be viewed online at this site, along with a key to and commentary on each drawing (except number 5). The artefacts date to the prehistoric, medieval and Viking periods. |
