| Title: | Roman calendar |
|---|---|
| Description: | The website "Roman Calendar" is a hypertext recreation by Dr Wally Kowalski, of Pennsylvania State University, of the 'Perpetual Calendar of the Ancient World'. Each ancient holiday (or feast or festival) of the Julian calendar is accompanied by a description of its importance, and an image of the associated god or goddess from the pantheon of Roman religions (that draw on the antiquity of Rome, Greece, Mesopotamia, and Egypt). There is an introduction to the calendar, the months of which contained 3 primary markers (the Kalends, the Nones and the Ides). There is also an excellent, if brief, illustrated account of the archaeology of the Julian calendar - the few fragments of Roman calendars that survive, (collectively known as Fasti). Click on the images to study an enlarged picture. The references that support the Roman Calendar are also listed. With the hypertext calendar the user can find out who was celebrated on which day. Instructions for use are provided on the site; the user clicks on the day from the whole year for a detailed summary, including the modern calendar date. The calendar is also browsable week by week in linear fashion. Poor quality Gif images of the whole calendar are available here; however this might best be used as a reference source for a particular festival or date, or as an interesting diversion. |
