This website charts the history of the Italian immigrants who settled in the Ancoats area of Manchester in the mid-19th century. The site, authored by a local historian, is well designed, engaging and easy to use. The content is mainly narrative and broken up into several chapters, looking at the early years in Manchester; Italian associations; industries; music; events; church and school; the Second World War; ice cream; and the Italian-English community now. The chapters are all illustrated with some great photographs and digitised primary sources, such as the balance sheets of the Manchester Italian Catholic Society. Also featured on the site is a list of Italian surnames in the area, biographies of a few individuals, and a message board.
