Virtual motor city : images from the Detroit news

Virtual Motor City is a digitisation project, carried out by the Wayne State University (WSU) Library System and WSU's Walter P. Reuther Library. The project makes digitally available, a small subset of the Detroit News Collection, "one of the premier photojournalistic resources freely available from a national-level newspaper and held at the Reuther Library". In 1997, the outgoing editor at the Detroit News presented the newspaper's original negatives, and their copyright, to the library. The collection itself contains over 800,000 negatives dating from the late 19th century on. The images digitised by this project can be browsed by decade or topic, or searched. Also as a part of the Virtual Motor City project a number of 1920's Detroit News Newsreels have been digitized. There are currently over 400 available online through the website. The project has been funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), a U.S. federal agency.
