Using dentition to age cattle

This illustrated tutorial provides guidance on using dentition to determine the age of cattle. Produced by the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture, this tutorial discusses and demonstrates types of teeth and their location in bovine jaws; deciduous incisors versus permanent incisors; eruption times for deciduous and permanent teeth; and using eruption times of permanent incisors to age cattle. References are provided.

The home page of the Dendrochronology working group in Hamburg, Germany, a section of Federal Research Centre for Forestry and Forest Products. The site gives some basic information on dendrochronology and various offshoots such as dendroecology and dendroclimatology. There is an extensive bibliography in section "Literatur". A few research projects in Germany are presented in section "Arbeitsgebiete". There are a number of links to other websites concerned with dendrochronology.

This site gives access to a database containing descriptions of all species and higher-ranked taxa of the gymnosperms, with an emphasis on conifers. The database can be searched or browsed by family or genus name; however, records for many taxa are not yet complete. Individual entries link to descriptions of anatomy, taxonomy, morphology and distribution, with associated images, illustrations and bibliographic citations. Other topics covered include tree age determination, gymnosperms of Alta California, gymnosperms of Sichuan, and palaeobotany of Australian and New Zealand conifers. In addition, the site provides annotated links to online databases, botanical gardens, glossaries and other resources. The site has been developed by forest ecologist Christopher Earle at the Department of Botany, Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn in Germany.

Forensic odontology is the branch of forensic medicine dealing with the examination, handling and presentation of dental evidence in a court of law. Aspects of the work include dental records, analysis of bite marks on victims of attack and identification of human remains. The website of the British Association for Forensic Odontology (BAFO) describes the work in some depth, provides a list of forensic odontologists in England and Wales, gives details of courses and textbooks, and links to other websites of forensic dental importance, for example in relation to bite marks, age determination, identification, and dental jurisprudence. There is also a paper on the effect of TV programmes on forensic science. Information about BAFO and how to join is also provided.
