Each issue includes book reviews, and all articles, summaries and reviews can be e mailed, or presented in a print view. The journal has a bias towards political, economic and social issues, so is suitable for social scientists from higher education communities. As of 2009, only one issue is available in English translation, therefore an intermediate level of French is required.

Meter down

http://meterdown.wordpress.com/

The meter down blog contains a collection of interviews (in Hindi), writing in English and audio feeds documenting a number of conversations with Bombay taxi drivers. The interviews are explorations into the issues of migration and are a collection of sub-altern voices in a city consumed with the narrative of globalisation and rapid change. This non-academic project, is slowly, conversation by conversation, assembling a repository of oral histories. At the time of this review (December 2008) there were sixteen interviews on the site, each giving an interesting context to the interview and the interviewee, with photographs and a personal history of each informant. A podcast is also available so that new interviews can be automatically downloaded as they are created. An RSS feed allows similar warning of new content for those wishing to view, rather than hear the content. An ambitious project which could become quite significant, this is a fascinating site which should interest urban historians, social scientists and political commentators alike.

There is also the promise of future results from the survey, which should prove useful to any scholar of South Asian art and the perceptions of its meaning among different audiences. Those wishing to view the artworks will have to create an account with a user name and password.

Kalasampada digital library : resources of Indian cultural heritage

http://ignca.nic.in/dgt_0001.htm

The website Kalsampada comprises an impressive and very large databank of resources, publications and ephemera relating to Indian art and culture. The site gives information about and access to the extensive holdings of the Indira Gandhi national centre for the arts, many of which are available freely for download through links available on the home page. There are collections of photographs, ebooks, papers, research reports, essays, bibliographies and audio recordings, all with annotations and notes and a great number freely accessible. While this is only a pilot project, the scope and scale of what is available is very impressive and the promise of what might be possible in the future is very great. The design is not fantastic, and the home page could be less cluttered to make searching more simple, but this is a laudable project which should become a very important research tool in the future.

eDemocracia

http://edemocracia.blogspot.com/

"eDemocracia" is the blog of a Spanish organisation which was created in 2003 to study the impact that new technologies are having on democratic systems and, more precisely, the case of Spain. The site discusses in what ways the internet and new technologies may help to increase political action, transparency and the active participation of people in political decisions. Although there are a few articles and comments about worldwide issues, the site will mainly be of interest to those dedicated to the impact of new media and technology in Spanish society and politics. The site offers the possibility of reading working papers and articles by the members of this organisation. Some examples are: "E-Participación: de la remediación a la simulación"; "Ciberactivismo y alfabetización digital"; "eDemocracia, retos y limites para la Acción, la Participación y la Representación Política". The site also features some information about symposiums on the matter, and an exhaustive list of links. London Chinese cultural centre

http://www.chineseculturalcentre.org.uk/

The London Chinese Cultural Centre stages film, education and music and performance events in the capital. Its simple homepage lists a guide to current and future events, of which users are able to read a brief summary, and be navigated to a new page for further visual and textual information (in English and complicated Chinese characters). One of the main annual events run by the centre is the London Chinese Film Festival, which shows Mainland Chinese, Hong Kong and Taiwanese films, often without other UK distribution networks. The Centre also stages film shows throughout the year, and it is worthwhile to visit the films section of the website for information on new and recent releases.

The website also offers contact details of the centre, and a short list of links to related websites, although it is need of expansion. The website would be of value to anyone interested in the diasporic Chinese community, and Chinese cultural activities. Its main interest, however, lies in its short descriptions of its film programme.

Tank Man

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/tankman/

The accompanying online resource to the PBS Frontline programme, The Tank Man, follows the image of a young man standing in front of a tank used to quash the Tiananmen protests in 1989 to interrogate the progress of political and ideological freedoms in modern China. Users will find a brief introduction to the programme, and sections on the Tiananmen Square protests and their aftermath, which include: eyewitness accounts and press reactions to the 1989 protests; a timeline of key events in the student movement; discussions of the aftermath of the protests and their government repression; and discussions on censorship and freedom of information in Mainland China. Unfortunately, users in some countries (including the United Kingdom) are not able the view the programme online due to rights restrictions.

The website would be of value to anyone with an interest in modern Chinese political history. It includes a great deal of textual information from respected academics on freedoms and rights in China, and extends the debate about the protests beyond their immediate historical context to their implications on culture in China today. Teachers of secondary level will also fins a teachers' guide with lesson plans, and the site acts as a gateway to related websites and online journalism, although it should be noted that not all links are still active at the time of review.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/reith2008/

The online companion to BBC Radio 4's 2008 Reith Lecture series allows users to listen to and read transcripts of talks and discussion from China expert Jonathan Spence. The Reith lectures were inaugurated in order to increase public understanding of important issues of the day, and in 2008 (Beijing Olympic year), Spence delivered lectures on: Chinese ideas of sport and athleticism; the relationship between China and the United States; China and the United Kingdom in the post-Mao era; and Confucius and Confucianism. Users are able to listen to each forty minute lecture in full, and read a full transcript of each lecture, followed by an account of the following question and answer section with the audience and invited guests.

Users can read a short biography of Spence, a Fellow at Clare College Cambridge at the time of the lectures, and the website acts as a gateway to other BBC and Open University resources on Chinese language and culture. The page would be of value to anyone interested in engaging with a debate on contemporary China's place within the wider world.

International development : inside China

http://www.open2.net/society/international_development/insidechinamenu.html

This section of the online teaching resource from the Open University concentrates upon giving a basic economic, social and political background to modern mainland China. From the main page, users may access textual information on: the influence of China on energy policy in Ghana; the Chinese education system; the economy's impact on the environment; and Chinese social freedoms. The two largest sections of the resource concentrate on China's school system, and an extended lecture on China's economic impact upon the wider world, particularly Africa. In an extended economics and trade lecture from Raphael Klapinsky, Professor of International Development at the Open University, topics are presented in textual form, as well as in audio and visual formats, with no special plugin required to view and listen to material. The resource would be of value to anyone with an interest in China's changing place in the world, and in China's rise as an economic power. Frontline: Dreams of Tibet

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/tibet/

The accompanying online resource to the PBS Frontline programme, Dreams of Tibet, introduces users to the political, religious, and cultural background of this still contentious region, governed by the Chinese state. From the main page, users can: read interviews with historians and public figures (explaining their attitude towards Tibet and Buddhism); read book excerpts and official reports on China's relationship with Tibet; read about contemporary and historical expeditions to Tibet; and learn about Buddhism's evolution in Tibet. Unfortunately, unlike other online resources from Frontline, users are unable to view the original broadcast film online, although it is possible to download a written transcript.

The website also acts as a gateway to other online resources about the Tibetan independence movement. Although the resource is clearly on the side of those who call for independence for the region, it is a valuable resource for anyone interested in an introduction to the region, and it is a useful online secondary and primary source, with contributions from such figures as Henry Kissinger, and prominent historians Orville Schell and Andrew Nathan.

Village Works

http://www.davismuseum.wellesley.edu/VillageWorks/index.html

From 1992 to 1993, women in villages of rural north west China were given cameras to record a year of their daily life, as pat of a women's reproductive health programme supported by the Ford Foundation. The resulting pictures not only formed an exhibition, but were used as prompts to discussions with officials on improving conditions in the areas involved. From the main page of the website, users can view a textual introduction to the project, and link to selected photographs, covering: work; family; household chores; community; and social change in the villages. Each photograph is annotated with descriptions from the Chinese photographer, and some include brief contextualisation from Western academic sources. In addition, short HTML essays are provided, which elaborate on themes of Chinese women, rural development, and interpreting visual culture.

Although the website as a whole is showing its age in the expiration of many of its recommended gateways, it remains a valuable insight into rural China, which users can interpret from a Western anhropological eye, or through the self-presentation of the Chinese photographers themselves.

China and Europe, 1500 - 2000 and beyond

http://afe.easia.columbia.edu/chinawh/

In this online teaching and learning resource from Columbia University's Asia For Educators series, professors Bin Wong and Ken Pomeranz debate the comparative development of China and Europe in the five hundred years from 1500. In a series of sections, each with an accompanying video (played through RealPlayer), topics are explored chronologically, charting the relative development of the two regions. Issues explored include the growth in population of the two regions, industrial progress, and political modernity, with a view to examining what is meant by a 'modern' state and economy.

In addition, users will find an extensive bibliography of printed secondary sources, and a comprehensive page on troubleshooting problems with the website. A number of statistical tables are also provided in PDF format. The resource would be of interest to anyone with an interest in historiography, and the comparative development of the Chinese economy and society.

Creating Buddhas : the making and meaning of fabric thangkas

http://www.creatingbuddhas.com/

The website 'Creating Buddhas: the Making and Meaning of Fabric Thangkas' is partly a promotional site for a film about a woman working on these Tibetan artworks in north America. The site gives information about the making of the film and a three-minute trailer for the documentary, as well as information about the film maker and those involved in the project. It is included in this database as the film is a not-for-profit production and of academic merit. The site also gives a list of the numerous past and present screenings of the film in public cinemas. These are mostly in the US, although there have been screenings in Europe as well. There are a number of still images taken from the film showing the various stages of the production of the thangkas. It would be nice to have more information about the craft itself, rather than the documentary, but this site presents a taster of what appears an interesting and useful resource.

The oldest grammar of Hindustani: contact, communication and colonial legacy

http://www.aa.tufs.ac.jp/~kmach/gicas/Ketelaar/Ketelaar.htm

This is a slightly confusing website which contains an extremely important document in full facsimile. Jean Josua Ketelaar's Hindustani dictionary purports to be the oldest work on the grammar of the language. It is presented here page by page as jpeg files, along with a list of the words included in the book compiled by the site's designers. Unfortunately there is no background information, guide to use of the site or proper index, so it is up to the user to find their own way around the document. The dictionary is organised thematically and two images are given alongside a Dutch and English heading, one headed 'prints' and the other 'microfilms'. The latter are very large, high resolution images taken from rather scratchy microfilms, the former are smaller images, but more easily legible - it would be useful to know why both are included and what the sources are from which they were taken. A very important, useful, but flawed resource.

Jews and the graphic novel

http://www.jbooks.com/common/uploads/graphic_novel/index.html

'Jews and the Graphic Novel' is a 22-page documentary comic book created and written by David Gantz. This comic is free to read online, and offers a condensed history of the immense contribution made by American Jewish men to the art and craft of the comic book in the 20th century. The author has the advantage of having worked in the industry since the 1940s, and there is particular focus on the impact of the Second World War on the industry. In 22 pages, this free online comic can only scratch the surface of a history which is now dealt with in a significant number of scholarly history books - such as 'From Krakow to Krypton: Jews and comic books'; 'The Jewish graphic novel: critical approaches'; 'Up, Up, and Oy Vey'; and 'Disguised as Clark Kent: Jews, Comics, and the Creation of the Superhero', among others. It does however give a useful outline introduction for those who are just starting to take an interest in the topic.

Armenia was the first country to adopt Christianity as its official religion, in 301 AD, and the site gives a brief history of Christianity in the region, plus background information about the country and details of the church's hierarchy. While the site gives a useful introduction to the subject, it is probably not detailed enough to be of use for more advanced research. It does, however, offer an interesting gallery of several dozen black-and-white images of aspects of church architecture and decoration, and of key personnel and events in the Armenian church, though unfortunately detailed descriptions of these are not provided. The site features text adverts, which some users may find distracting.

Godišnjak za društvenu istoriju

http://www.udi.rs/annual.asp

The website Godišnjak za društvenu istoriju (Annual for Social History) is the online presence of this annual published in Belgrade, Serbia since 1994 by the Association for Social History. The publication focuses on social history issues of Serbia and the Balkans from the medieval period onward and appears in three issues per annum. The language of the annual is Serbian, although some articles are in English. Articles have English language abstracts. The annual publishes research articles, book reviews and a review of academic websites with a focus on history. Issues can be accessed from a drop-down menu. The presentation of the annual is not consistent for all issues: some articles are listed with their original Serbian title with an English translation, others not, just as some studies are presented in Cyrillic script, while others with Latin characters. The available online articles follow a similar inconsistent approach: while all issues have their tables of contents posted, they vary greatly in the number of available full-text articles. Each article is a separate PDF file. The site is easy to navigate and is bilingual, Serbian and English. The "Godišnjak za društvenu istoriju" is a valuable resource for those interested in Serbian history with the proviso that they have a medium command of Serbian.

The site includes definitions of the various rhetorical divisions, and links are provided to some of the classical treatises on rhetoric.
