China gateway

http://bc.edu/research/chinagateway/index.html

China Gateway is a collection of annotated gateways of relevance to undergraduate students and their teachers. Although primarily meant as a study aid for the students of Boston College, China Gateway aims to offer a concise introduction to the manner in which developments in the digital world have aided the study of Chinese culture and society. From the Culture and History section of the main page, users will find links to gateways (themed in sections), covering: geography and maps; language and literature; introductions to Chinese Studies; history, politics and society; medicine; religion; news and media; libraries and archives; and visual and performing arts. Each link is annotated with basic information about the resource, and selected websites encompass bibliographic resources, online projects, and university libraries and departments.

In addition, users will find a reference section (the 'Historical Toolkit'), which presents basic undergraduate-level learning modules on China's dynasties, 1920s calendar advertisements, and images from the Dianshizhai Pictorial. Separate sections contain textual information on studying China at Boston College, and resources for researchers of Chinese studies in the city (many of which include further gateways to other online resources). China Gateway would be of interest to any tutors of undergraduate level Chinese Studies in search of learning resources and starting points for their students. Its selection of gateways is well-organised, and avoids the endless unannotated lists of websites common to similar resources.

Old China hands archive

http://library.csun.edu/OldChinaHands/

The Old China Hands Archive is a project hosted by the Oviatt Library Digital Collections, based at California State University, Northridge. The resource primarily consists of a textual introductory page, and digitised images of Tientsin (modern day Tianjin) in the late 1940s. Old China Hands is a term referring to westerners with an experiential knowledge of China, usually through long-term residence or service. Although users will not find a huge collection of photographs, those included here reveal a great deal about life in China during the turbulent Civil War years. Images cover: children; evacuation; the foreign presence in China; the elderly; and street life in Tientsin.

Users can browse the images, or search through keywords. Images are displayed in full size and thumbnail versions, along with associated keywords, which can be selected to reveal further images. However, the resource as a whole would benefit from further contextualisation of its images, or a further section on the historical background to the collection. It would be of interest to any historian of urban, Civil War China, and to those seeking images of foreign military presence in China.

88 Bar

http://www.88-bar.com/

The English-language blog, 88 Bar, covers observations of popular culture posted by its experienced contributors. The website is little more than a series of posts, gateways and video and image files, but provides a helpful overview of cultural currents for those living outside China. 88 Bar was created by Chinese-born graphic designer, Jason Li, and Lyn Jeffery, a research director at Institute for the Future, who has spent more than 25 years covering mainland Chinese affairs. Posts on 88 Bar cover such subjects as: internet gaming; modern art; photography; television; music; and Western attitudes towards China. However, the blog also covers current affairs, and has observations on: Chinese education; ethnic unrest; censorship; and the Chinese police.

Although not a 'scholarly' resource in the traditional sense, 88 Bar has much to offer the student of Chinese popular culture and cultural and media studies. It contains a great many gateways to similar resources of interest, and picks out phenomonen (such as web pages or YouTube excerpts) currently circulating in China. Although its vernacular may offend some, it is a valuable (albeit subjective) introduction to Chinese trends.

Alternative Archive

http://www.alternativearchive.com/

Alternative Archive is a collection of music, design and modern cultural critique collected in electronic form by graphic designer and cultural commentator Ou Ning and modern artist Cao Fei. From the main page, users are presented with a main menu and a side menu. The main menu deals with the site itself, and is mainly made up of the archive itself: a list of gateways to recent news items and articles on comtemorary Chinese culture and art (in either English or Chinese, but rarely with translation). Although the entries have not been updated beyond 2006, there is an impressive amount of information on media coverage of Chinese culture, and related exhibitions and festivals. The Alternative Archive main menu also links to information on Ou Ning and Cao Fei, along with contact details, and a short introduction to the site (in simplified Chinese).

The side menu to Alternative Archives acts as a gateway to larger online resources dealing with contemporary Chinese culture, many of which relate to projects of Ou Ning and Cao Fei. For example, users will find gateways to personal blogs and web pages from Ou Ning and Cao Fei, along with project pages with which they have been involved. For example, pages link to (some of these resources are catalogued separately): the Da Zha Lan project (on Beijing hutongs); the Institute of Sound blog (a collaboration of sound artists, field recording specialists and architects); Sonic China (Ou Ning's graphic design project); a page on the GetItLouder exhibition (an exhibit of modern Chinese graphic design); and the U-theque organisation, devoted to the screening, making and distribution of independent film. The website would be of interest to any researcher of contemporary Chinese media culture. A level of skill in reading Chinese would be helpful, since some sections of the site are only presented in Simplified Chinese. Moreover, since may new windows use pop-ups, this function may have to be enabled on some browsers.

Tongzhi Culture is a part of the Digital Archive for Chinese Studies, maintained by the University of Leiden. 'Tongzhi' is the Chinese word for 'comrade', used widely as a form of address in the Maoist period, now re-appropriated and given an ironic twist by the country's urban gay community. On the main page, users will find a short textual introduction on gay culture in China, taken from Edward Davis' Encyclopedia of Contemporary Chinese Culture. In addition, users also have free online access to Remy Cristini's MA thesis on Tongzhi Literature, who is now a policy advisor at the Netherlands' Embassy in Beijing. The (English language) thesis can be downloaded or viewed immediately, and has an impressive bibliography, much of which is provided with links to original primary sources.

Users will also find an article on catamites in ancient China, a CCTV programme on homosexuals and HIV (which can be viewed online), and a link to two Chinese websites on gay culture. Although there could be more featured articles and gateways, Tongzhi Culture is a welcome beginning to scholarly resources on homosexual culture and history in China.

The Da Zha Lan project

http://www.dazhalan-project.org/

The Da Zha Lan area in the centre of Beijing bore witness to the commercial shifts in Chinese history, from small-scale handicrafts to capitalist trade in well-known brands, to the socialist managed economy. However, now this area south west of Tiananmen Square has degenerated into a slum, having had little capital development since architectural restrictions limit the regeneration of hutongs (traditional narrow alleys) and more prosperous residents move out to the suburbs as poorer immigrants move in. The Da Zha Lan project aims to film the area and its inhabitants in order to research social poverty, economic hardship and urban development, aiming to culminate in the production of a documentary.

The Da Zha Lan project website is available in both English and chinese (although many sections are solely in Chinese), and contains a general introduction to the project, along with a news blog (Chinese) documenting media coverage of issues surrounding hutongs and development. Users can view images of the project as it progressed throughout various sections of the resource, download sound files of street sounds, view information on exhibitions that came from the Da Zha Lan team's research, and read about the filming project. The site also acts as a gateway to related resources of interest, most of which remain active. The resource would be of interest to anyone researching the social and geographical development of China's cities, and would be of most value to those with an intermediate level of Chinese (since much of the textual information contained on the site - such as research essays) are not translated into English.

Byzantine monuments of Attica

http://www.eie.gr/byzantineattica/view.asp?lg=en

This excellent website, the Byzantine Monuments of Attica, provides a wealth of information on the history of Athens during the Byzantine rule of the city. Looking at the ways in which the Byzantine Empire sought to Christianise the city, its buildings and its inhabitants, and the ways in which the Empire looked to destroy the Classical traditions, practices and learnings, this website provides information on the buildings and ruins of Athens and the various objects (mostly artworks including sculptures and paintings) and their role in the history of the city. The website is easily navigated, being split into three main sections: a comprehensive and detailed introduction to the history of Athens during this period; lists of monuments (listed alphabetically, by type, or geographically on a map); and objects (listed under two broad headings of sculpture-mosaic and wall paintings). There is, furthermore, a list of terms relating to the information presented. It is somewhat unfortunate that no keyword searching is available on the site, but this barely detracts from what is an exceptionally valuable academic and visual resource.

Demography of Sri Lanka, 1900-1954

http://www.data-archive.ac.uk/findingData/snDescription.asp?sn=3454

This is a Web page detailing the context, range and availability of the "Demography of Sri Lanka, 1900-1954 : Trends in Fertility and Mortality in Pre-Demographic Transition Sri Lanka" dataset hosted by the History Data Service (HDS), based at the UK Data Archive University of Essex (formerly part of the Arts and Humanities Data Service - AHDS). The data is available to order from the HDS as a tab delimited texts and DBF databases. From this Web page you may download a PDF of images of the study documentation. To make use of this dataset you must first register with the HDS, and further information is supplied giving instructions. The aims of this study were: to examine trends in fertility, nuptiality and mortality in Sri Lanka (Ceylon became Sri Lanka in 1972) in the period prior to demographic transition, i.e. prior to the 1950s; and to search for the reasons for changes which occurred, by examining how these varied across the approximately 20 administrative districts of the island and considering whether this variation was associated with district characteristics such as literacy, availability of health services, etc. There is a tendency to suppose that, prior to transition, developing world countries had more or less constant fertility and mortality - at high levels - albeit with the fluctuations in both caused by famines and epidemics. There may have been more complex movements in Sri Lanka.
