North West Film Archive

Rescuing and ensuring the survival of moving images about the North West of England for the education and enjoyment of the region's people - both today and in the future.

The North West Film Archive is one of Britain's largest public moving image collections outside London. Set up in 1977, it currently holds over 30,000 reels of film and videotape, and grows annually. The collection includes cinema newsreels, documentaries, educational films, travelogues, advertising and promotional material, corporate videos and regional television programmes - alongside hundreds of films shot by local families and enthusiasts. The North West is vividly captured in both professional and amateur footage - a powerful record of modern urban society in moving pictures.

Academic research and reference access to the collection (by appointment) is free to staff and students at UK Further and Higher education institutions and video loans can sometimes be arranged (charges may apply). A notice period of three weeks is required to secure the availability of material - please contact us as early as possible with your requirements.

If you require further information about the Archive's collections, have a project for which you require moving images, or would like to make a viewing appointment, please contact the North West Film Archive at: n.w.filmarchive@mmu.ac.uk
