Visión de los vencidos

http://biblioweb.dgsca.unam.mx/libros/vencidos/

'Visión de los Vencidos' (literally 'Viewpoint of the Defeated' but translated into English as 'The Broken Spears: The Aztec Account of the Conquest of Mexico') is an anthology of texts by the historian and anthropologist Miguel León-Portilla which presents the history of the Spanish Conquest of America from an indigenous point of view; hence following a type of historiography which focuses on the perspective of the 'other'. The book was first published by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in 1959 and it is considered nowadays a seminal work on the historiography of the Conquista. The repository of Digital Publications of the university has now made available the full-text content of the 12th edition of the book. Each of the fifteen chapters gathers fragments from several primary sources about the 'Conquista', and in particular the conquest of México-Tenochtitlan. The resource is very valuable insofar as some of these texts are translations from Nahuatl into Spanish. Short introductions and footnotes may help the reader with some difficult terms and the background of texts. 'Visión de los Vencidos' has been translated into many languages, but the site offers the Spanish version only. Even though the book was published some decades ago it still provides an indispensable insight into the Spanish conquest of America.
